Group health insurance renewal
Group Health Insurance Renewal: What to Do Before Your Deadline
Your renewal letter came with a bigger number, and you have weeks, not months, to decide what to do about it. Calling a broker for a second opinion costs you time, not a plan change. A CPIS benefits specialist answers, looks at your letter with you, and tells you what we need to start quotes.
Have these ready when you call
- Your renewal letter
- Your current plan summary
- Your employee count
We answer Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM.
The 2027 picture
Where 2027 Rates Are Heading
These are public numbers, not your quote. Your renewal letter has your carrier’s number for your group, and that is the one that counts.
Idaho
BoiseDev reported on October 8, 2026 that the Idaho Department of Insurance’s 2027 rates show small group premiums rising about 12% on average. For the rules and dates that apply to Idaho employers, see our page on group health insurance in Idaho.
Missouri and Kansas
The Beacon reported on August 6, 2026 that small group filings in Missouri and Kansas are in the double digits for several carriers. These are preliminary filings and may change. Examples from the filings:
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City: 15.58% in Missouri, 13.39% in Kansas
- UnitedHealthcare: 17.23% in Missouri, 11.47% in Kansas
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas: 9.61% in Kansas
Missouri’s Department of Commerce and Insurance expects final 2027 rates by October 31, 2026. These are carriers’ public filings, not a list of the carriers CPIS works with. We work with employers in Kansas City, from our office in Columbia, and in many other places, as you can see on our Areas We Serve page.
The timeline
What You Do and What CPIS Does, Step by Step
Start at step 1 and work down.
Step 1
Read the renewal letter
You: Look for the new rate, any plan changes and the date you must respond.
CPIS: We can read it with you on the first call.
Step 2
Call or schedule a time
You: Call (816) 552-9476 or use the schedule link.
CPIS: A benefits specialist asks to see your renewal letter and current plan summary, and asks how many employees you have.
Step 3
Sign the broker-of-record letter
This one-page letter names CPIS as your broker, so carriers will quote and talk to CPIS about your group. It does not change your plan by itself.
Step 4
Send the census
You: A census lists your employees: names, dates of birth, zip codes, and whether each person is covered alone or with family. Nothing medical.
CPIS: We use one census for every carrier, so you fill it out once.
Step 5
Quotes come in
You: Answer any questions we have about your group.
CPIS: We request quotes from the carriers in your state among our 29.
Step 6
Read the side-by-side
You: Ask about anything that is unclear.
CPIS: We put premium, deductible, network and what changes for your employees in one comparison.
Step 7
Make the decision
You: Choose to switch or to stay.
CPIS: We do the paperwork either way.
Step 8
Enroll and set the date
You: Your employees enroll.
CPIS: We help with enrollment. Your carrier sets the date your enrollment paperwork is due for a January 1 start. Ask us for it.

What Changes for Your Employees
If you stay with your carrier, most employees will notice only the new rates and any plan changes in your letter. If you change carriers, expect three things.
- New ID cards
- Possibly a new network, which is the set of doctors and hospitals the plan has contracts with
- New plan details and an enrollment form
What to tell them: what is changing, when it starts, which doctors or hospitals to check against the new network, and where to ask questions.
Staying is an answer too
If You Want to Keep Your Current Plan
CPIS can still work the renewal on the same carrier. We review the letter with you and handle the renewal paperwork. Quotes from other carriers help you know whether staying is the right call, and you decide.
