What it means for you
Kansas Carriers Have Filed 2027 Increases
The Beacon reported on August 6, 2026 that Kansas small group carriers filed preliminary 2027 increases, from 9.61% at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas to 13.39% at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. Those are the carriers’ own rate filings. They are not a list of the carriers CPIS works with, and a filing is not the rate on your letter. Because each carrier files its own number, two Kansas employers can see very different increases at the same renewal.
Your renewal letter shows what your carrier plans to charge your group. Look for the new monthly rate, any change to the deductible, the copays or the doctor network, and the date your carrier needs your answer. Our group health insurance renewal guide walks through the full timeline.
Kansas rules
Kansas Small Group Rules, in Plain Words
Source: Kansas law, K.S.A. 40-2209d and 40-2209p on Justia.
Who counts as small
A small employer has at least 2 and no more than 50 eligible employees on at least half of its working days in the prior year, and most of them work in Kansas.
Who is an eligible employee
An eligible employee works a normal week of 30 or more hours. Part-time, temporary and substitute workers are excluded.
Guaranteed issue since 1997
An insurer selling small group coverage in Kansas must accept every small employer that applies, and all of its eligible employees and dependents in their first enrollment period.
Contribution and participation
Insurers may still set a minimum employer contribution and a minimum number of eligible employees who must enroll.
These are the basics of the statute, not advice on your group. Tell us your headcount and where your people work, and we will tell you what we need.
What CPIS does
Small Business Health Insurance in Kansas, Handled by Phone or Video
Champion’s Pride Insurance Services is an independent employer benefits brokerage, founded in 1997 and American owned and operated. Everything starts from one employee census. From it we request the quotes and lay them out for comparison. Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa and Leawood are among the Kansas City area markets we serve. See our group health insurance overview and the areas we serve.
The Kansas City metro straddles the state line, and many businesses here have employees on both sides of it. The CPIS phone is a Kansas City number, and founder Tim Williams is based in Blue Springs, on the Missouri side. The Kansas rules above treat a group as a Kansas group when most of its employees work in Kansas, so tell us where your people work and we will start from there. Missouri measures size by the average over the prior calendar year instead, which our Missouri guide explains.
Four things we do for you
- Take one employee census from you, so the form is filled out only once
- Ask the carriers that write Kansas small groups among our 29 to quote your group
- Line up premium, deductible, network and the effect on your employees in one side-by-side
- Take care of the paperwork, whether your group moves carriers or stays put
Switching at renewal
Switching Your Kansas Group at Renewal
This is the short version. The group health insurance renewal guide has the full timeline.
Step 1
Read your renewal letter
Find the new rate, any plan changes and the date your carrier needs your answer.
Step 2
Call us with the letter
A CPIS benefits specialist will tell you what we need to start quotes.
Step 3
Send the letter and the census
The broker-of-record letter is a single page that makes CPIS your named broker. With it, carriers will quote your group through CPIS and speak with CPIS about it. The letter alone does not change your plan. The census is simply your list of employees.
Step 4
Compare, decide and enroll
We bring you the quotes side by side. Your carrier sets the date your enrollment paperwork is due before your new plan year starts. Ask us for it. If you stay with your current carrier, we handle that paperwork too.
Ready when you are
